One of many important pieces of industrial equipment in service across a wide range of fields is the manlift; a relatively simple piece of equipment that does just what the name suggests. Simple though it may be, it’s as important as with any piece of heavy machinery to take the right precautions and operate it safely. The team at Hi Lo Industrial is ready and able to provide manlifts and service for them, and today we’re also here to share some tips for safely operating one.
1. Invest in training.
As we mentioned already, the manlift is relatively simple machine. That doesn’t make it devoid of danger. That’s why it’s important to receive all the proper training from a reputable source before using one, and to supplement that training with a clear understanding of the instructions found in the manufacturer’s manual.
2. Inspect machinery prior to use.
A good rule of thumb for operating any heavy machinery is to give it a careful once-over before using it. This doesn’t need to be a professional grade inspection, but as an operator, it’s important to be able to recognize the signs that the machine is or is not in good working order.
3. Adhere to load weight limits.
Generally, manlifts are simple used to put one person within working distance of a task, for example changing a light bulb in a commercial building. Sometimes there is a need for them to carry additional weight, but any given manlift will have weight limits that can be found in the manual. Never exceed that weight. Perhaps the greatest danger on manlift is a failure at height.
4. Don’t modify the equipment.
Except in a very few cases where a manufacturer has specifically designed and certified the manlift for certain modifications, the equipment should never be changed, particularly in the field.
With these tips in mind, and a careful hand at the controls, you can confidently operate your manlift equipment, and complete any job you find yourself undertaking.
